Dr. Joyce Medina

Optometrist | Founder, Joyce B. Medina, O.D., APC

Dr. Joyce B. Medina, O.D. has been practicing optometry since 1996. Born in Honolulu and raised in San Diego, she earned her Bachelor of Science in Biology from San Diego State University, where she also served as president of the Pre-Optometry Club. While working as an optometric assistant in private practice, she discovered her passion for helping patients achieve better vision.


She went on to earn both her Doctor of Optometry degree and a Bachelor of Science in Vision Science from the Illinois College of Optometry in Chicago. During her training, Dr. Medina completed externships in primary care, ocular disease, and contact lenses, and contributed to the profession with a published research study in an optometric journal.


Her career has included leadership as a Managing Optometrist in corporate optometry, providing medical eye care alongside an ophthalmologist at a busy eye and laser medical center, and operating her own sublease practice in National City for seven years before joining the UnOptical. Dr. Medina has also been passionate about expanding access to vision care through her volunteer work with OneSight, providing free eye exams and glasses both locally and internationally in Mexico City, Baja California, Thailand, Bolivia, and Ghana.


Beyond optometry, Dr. Medina is deeply involved in her community. She has volunteered extensively at her children’s schools, in youth sports, high school band, and Boy Scouts. She often volunteers at optometric vision clinics and local events as well. She is also an avid runner, having completed many road and trail races from 5Ks to half marathons including five full marathons in Los Angeles, Chicago, New York City, Sacramento, and Ventura. 


Dr. Medina is a member of the American Optometric Association and the California Optometric Association, and she currently serves on the Board of the San Diego County Optometric Society. 


Outside of her practice, Dr. Medina enjoys reading, trying new foods, snowboarding, and visiting new destinations. Most of all, she treasures time spent being with her spouse and two sons watching movies, hiking and traveling. 

Dr. David Ierston-Brown

Associate Doctor

Dr. David Ierston-Brown is originally from Raleigh, North Carolina, and graduated cum laude from North Carolina State University with a Bachelor of Science in Biology. He then moved to Southern California to attend the Southern California College of Optometry, where he earned his Doctor of Optometry degree.

During his clinical training, Dr. Ierston-Brown completed rotations at the Indian Health Service in Santa Fe, New Mexico; the Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Monterey, California; Coastal Vision; and Orange County Retina Associates. These experiences provided him with extensive training in comprehensive eye care, ocular disease management, glaucoma evaluation, and dry eye treatment.

Dr. Ierston-Brown is licensed to practice optometry in California at the highest level permitted and is committed to providing thorough, personalized care to help patients maintain lifelong eye health and clear vision.

Outside of the office, he enjoys taking full advantage of Southern California’s outdoor lifestyle, including surfing, hiking, and skiing. He is currently training for his first marathon and hopes to visit every national park in California.w restaurants, attending live music events, and traveling to new destinations.
